ADHD in NSW
GP or psychiatrist for ADHD in NSW: who should you see in 2026?
In NSW you now have more than one way in. Here is how to choose, in plain words.
Medically reviewed by Dr Jaspreet Saini, FRACGP. Reviewed 8 October 2026.
The short answer
Some adults see a psychiatrist. Others see a NSW Health endorsed GP. Both are real options in 2026. You do not need a psychiatrist for every pathway.
Some situations still suit a psychiatrist. Your first step is to work out which group you are in.
A psychiatrist is a doctor who has trained in mental health. They can look closely at complex mixes of conditions. A GP looks after your whole health over time. Both can play a part in your care, and many people use both.
What changed in NSW
Since 2025, GPs with Continuation Prescriber training can continue treatment for adults who already have a diagnosis and a plan.
From 2026, GPs with Endorsed Prescriber status can also assess, diagnose and start treatment for adults. Both levels need formal NSW Health training. Our team includes GPs at both levels.

How it works
How GP-led care works with us
Assessment
The first visit is 60 minutes, in person at West Pennant Hills. A feedback visit follows about 3 to 4 weeks later.
Starting treatment
If treatment is right for you, our endorsed GP can start it. Your GP decides after seeing you.
Ongoing care
After that, most visits are by video visit across NSW, with an in-person check-up at least yearly.
Your GP decides on treatment after seeing you. Booking doesn’t guarantee a script.
Fees
What GP-led care costs
Our adult assessment is $1,202.45 across two visits. Starting treatment is $452.45. The first ongoing care visit is $287.45. All include HotDoc’s $2.45 booking fee.
Full details are on our pricing page. Read how assessment works on our ADHD diagnosis in NSW page.
Already have a psychiatrist?
Moving from a psychiatrist to a GP
You do not have to choose one or the other for life. Many people have a psychiatrist for a time, then continue with a GP.
If your treatment is stable and you have a diagnosis and plan, ask whether ongoing care with a GP suits you. Bring your latest letters. You can read more on what GPs can do for ADHD in NSW and on ongoing care.
Common questions
GP or psychiatrist: your questions
Do I need a psychiatrist to get an ADHD diagnosis in NSW?
No. A NSW Health endorsed GP can assess and diagnose ADHD in adults. Some people still choose a psychiatrist, or are advised to, and that is a fair choice.
Can a GP start ADHD treatment in NSW?
Yes, if the GP is an endorsed prescriber. Our endorsed GP can assess, diagnose and start treatment for adults. See our page on GP care in NSW.
Can I move my care from a psychiatrist to a GP?
Often, yes. If your treatment is stable and you have a diagnosis and plan, a GP with continuation training may be able to take over ongoing care. Your GP decides after seeing you.
What if my situation is complex?
Tell us at the visit. If a psychiatrist would suit you, our GPs will say so and can explain why. We can still work alongside them.
Do I have to live in Sydney?
No. The first visit is in person at West Pennant Hills. Ongoing care is then by video visit across NSW, as long as your GP agrees and NSW Health approval is in place if it is needed.
Not sure where to start?
Tell us about your situation and our team will point you to the right pathway.
