What it is
What is ADHD continuation prescribing?
Continuation prescribing is a NSW system. It lets trained GPs keep managing and prescribing ADHD medication for adults who already have a formal diagnosis. Not every repeat script has to go through a psychiatrist or paediatrician.
It is not a diagnosis service. It is only for people already diagnosed by a psychiatrist, paediatrician or suitably qualified clinical psychologist. Not diagnosed yet? Our ADHD assessments are open now.
- One local GP for check-ups and scripts
- Your full history reviewed before any decision
- The same GP where we can
- Your usual GP kept in the loop
- In person first, then video across NSW
Who it suits
Am I eligible for continuation prescribing?
This service may suit you if you have all of these.
A formal ADHD diagnosis
From a psychiatrist, paediatrician or suitably qualified clinical psychologist. An older report is usually fine if a qualified specialist wrote it.
A treatment plan in place
You need ongoing check-ups and repeat scripts, not a new diagnosis.
Your documents
Your original diagnosis report and, if you have one, a recent letter from your specialist.
A medication list
Your current medication, with the dose and how long you have taken it.
ID and Medicare card
Photo ID and a Medicare card, as for any GP visit in Australia.
NSW Health rules
These rules come from NSW Health. Continuation care is about a GP confirming and continuing a diagnosis a specialist has already made.

Why you need a continuation prescriber
Many adults with ADHD end up without a prescriber. Their specialist may have retired, moved or closed their books. This can leave a gap in your medication while you wait for a new specialist. A GP continuation prescriber gives you one local doctor for check-ups and repeat scripts. Your care then does not rely only on a specialist being free.
Our GPs’ prescribing qualifications
Our GPs have done extra training in ADHD assessment and medication. Under NSW rules, trained GPs can continue ADHD scripts for eligible adults. Our GPs review your history, check how treatment is going and write ongoing scripts for approved ADHD medication. They work from the diagnosis and plan your specialist set. Read about our doctors on our GP profiles page.
How often you’ll have reviews
We aim to keep you safe and check your medication, without taking up too much of your time. You start with an Initial ADHD Continuation Consult. After that, most people have a check-up every 3 to 6 months. The first visit looks at your whole treatment plan. A check-up is shorter, for returning patients.
Your first visit is always in person at West Pennant Hills. After that, care can be by video visit across NSW. For video care, you need a usual GP we can work with. NSW Health approval may be needed, and the doctor must agree it suits you. We write to your usual GP after your visit. You need an in-person check-up at least once a year.
Managing your ADHD medication long-term
Our GPs can prescribe approved adult ADHD medication, including stimulant and non-stimulant options. This is based on what your specialist has already found works for you. Ongoing care means checking how your medication is going and asking about side effects. Our GPs can adjust the dose of your current medication at a check-up. A change to a different medication is usually referred back to your specialist.
Booking your continuation appointment
New patients moving from a specialist can book an Initial ADHD Continuation Consult. At this visit, we review your records and set up your ongoing care. Existing patients can book a check-up. See our pricing page for full details, including our cancellation policy.
