ADHD medication initiation in NSW
You have an ADHD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, paediatrician or psychologist. But you have never started medication. An initiation visit is where treatment starts. Our GP checks your diagnosis and your health. The doctor decides if medication is right for you. If it is, we start it and keep an eye on how you go.
Your first visit is in person in West Pennant Hills. After that, care can be by video visit across NSW if the usual rules are met.
- AGPAL accredited
- GP-owned since 1997
- No referral needed
Is this the right appointment?
Initiation is for a diagnosis you have never acted on
Book initiation if
- A psychiatrist, paediatrician or psychologist has diagnosed you with ADHD.
- You have never taken ADHD medication.
- You have your diagnosis report, or can get a copy before your visit.
You may want a different appointment
- No diagnosis yet? Start with an adult ADHD assessment.
- Took ADHD medication before, then stopped? Book a restart appointment.
- Already on treatment and need more scripts? See continuation prescribing.
Who you will see
A GP trained to start ADHD treatment
In NSW, GPs complete formal training to prescribe for ADHD. Continuation Prescribers continue treatment for adults who already have a diagnosis and a plan. Endorsed Prescribers have further training. They can also assess, diagnose and start treatment.
Our team includes GPs at both levels. Your initiation visit is with a GP who can start treatment. Meet them on our GPs page.
- We work from your existing diagnosis
- A health check before any decision
- A written plan if treatment starts
- Your usual GP kept in the loop
- In person first, then video across NSW
How it works
What an initiation appointment involves
Send your paperwork first
Send us your diagnosis report and any specialist letters before your visit. Your GP reads them first. That way, your visit is spent on your treatment, not your history.
Your visit
We check your diagnosis and history. We check your general health, including blood pressure and heart rate. Then we talk about treatment options, what they do, and their risks and side effects.
Starting treatment
The doctor decides if medication is right for you. NSW Health approval may be needed first. If treatment starts, you get a written plan and a check-up booked. A script is never guaranteed.
Ongoing care
Once you have started, your check-ups continue as continuation appointments with us. We write to your usual GP so your care stays joined up.
Your GP decides on treatment after seeing you. Booking doesn’t guarantee a script.

Good questions
Common questions about starting ADHD medication
Do I need to be re-diagnosed if I already have a diagnosis?
No. If a psychiatrist, paediatrician or psychologist diagnosed you, we work from that diagnosis. Bring the report so your GP can see what was assessed and when. If your diagnosis is very old, or you can’t find the report, your GP will tell you what is needed.
Will I definitely be prescribed medication?
No. The doctor decides at your visit. It depends on your health, your history and the prescribing rules. Some people do better with a different approach. Some need a specialist’s input first. A script is never guaranteed. NSW Health approval may be needed before any medication starts.
What should I bring or send beforehand?
Your ADHD diagnosis report, any specialist letters, a list of the medicines you take now, and your usual GP’s details. If you have recent blood pressure, heart or ECG results, bring those too.
Can this appointment be done by telehealth?
Your first visit is always in person at our West Pennant Hills practice. This lets us examine you properly. After that, care can be by video visit across NSW. You need a usual GP we can work with. NSW Health approval may be needed, and the doctor decides if video care suits you. You also need an in-person check-up at least once a year.
How much does it cost?
The initiation consult is the total you pay, including HotDoc’s $2.45 booking fee. Fees are the same in person or by video visit. Visits are privately billed. See our pricing page for the fee for each visit.
I took ADHD medication years ago and stopped. Is this the right appointment?
No. That is a restart appointment. It is a different visit with a different fee. Initiation is for a diagnosis you have never acted on. Not sure which one fits? Book the restart appointment and tell us when you arrive.
For psychologists and GPs
