Restarting ADHD medication in NSW
You were on ADHD medication once, and then you stopped. Maybe your doctor retired or moved. Maybe scripts got hard to sort out. Maybe life got in the way. A restart visit picks your treatment back up. You don’t need to do the whole diagnosis again.
A gap of years is common, and that is okay. You don’t need a full paper trail. Bring what you can find.

- No referral needed
Is this the right appointment?
Restart is for treatment you have had before
You don’t need to have been treated recently. You don’t need a full paper trail either. A gap of years is common, and that is okay.
Book a restart if
- You have an ADHD diagnosis and have taken ADHD medication before.
- You stopped, for any reason, and want to go back on treatment.
- You no longer see the doctor who used to manage it.
You may want a different appointment
- Diagnosed but never started medication? Book an initiation appointment.
- Still on treatment and just need more scripts? See continuation prescribing.
- Never formally diagnosed? Start with an adult ADHD assessment.
Common reasons people take a break
People stop for all sorts of reasons
It helps to tell us why you stopped, but it is not a test. Knowing why helps your GP plan a restart that avoids the same problem.

How it works
What a restart appointment involves
Send what you can find
Send your diagnosis report, old specialist letters, or even the name and dose of what you used to take. Can’t find any of it? Book anyway and tell us. Your GP will help you work out what you need.
Your visit
We go through your diagnosis, what you took, how it went and why you stopped. We ask what has changed since. We also check your general health, including blood pressure and heart rate.
Returning to treatment
The doctor decides if treatment is right for you. NSW Health approval may be needed first. If treatment restarts, you get a written plan and a check-up booked. What worked before is only a starting point. A script is never guaranteed.
Ongoing care
Once you are settled, your check-ups continue as continuation appointments. We write to your usual GP after your visit, so your care stays joined up.
Your GP decides on treatment after seeing you. Booking doesn’t guarantee a script.

Good questions
Common questions about restarting ADHD medication
I stopped years ago. Do I have to be assessed all over again?
Usually not. If you have an ADHD diagnosis, we work from it. We don’t repeat the diagnosis. The length of the gap matters less than knowing what you were diagnosed with and what you took. If we can’t work that out at all, your GP will talk to you about a full assessment instead.
I can’t find my old paperwork. Can I still book?
Yes. Bring whatever you have, even small details. For example, the name of the doctor who diagnosed you, roughly when, or the medication and dose you were on. You can often get old records from a past practice or pharmacy. Your GP can tell you what is worth chasing.
Will I go back on the same medication and dose?
Not always. What you took before is useful to know. But your health, your other medicines and your life may have changed. Restarting is usually done slowly, not straight back at your old dose. The doctor decides. NSW Health approval may be needed. A script is never guaranteed.
Does it matter why I stopped?
It helps to tell us, but it is not a test. People stop for all sorts of reasons. Side effects, cost, a doctor who retired, pregnancy, a move, or just losing track during a hard time. Knowing why helps your GP plan a restart that avoids the same problem.
Can this appointment be done by telehealth?
Your first visit is always in person at our West Pennant Hills practice. This lets us examine you properly. After that, care can be by video visit across NSW. You need a usual GP we can work with. NSW Health approval may be needed, and the doctor decides if video care suits you. You also need an in-person check-up at least once a year.
How much does it cost, and is it covered by Medicare?
The restart consult is the total you pay, including HotDoc’s $2.45 booking fee. Check-ups afterwards are charged separately. Fees are the same in person or by video visit. A Medicare rebate may apply to some visits. Video visits get a rebate only in some cases, for example if you are a registered MyMedicare patient of the practice, or you saw one of our GPs in person in the last 12 months. Otherwise they are privately billed. Services Australia sets rebate amounts, and they change over time.
